How the trip cost is calculated

For each leg, fuel used = distance × consumption ÷ 100, and cost = fuel used × the average price in that country this week. The legs are added up for the total. If you enter consumption in mpg or km/L, it is converted to litres per 100 km first (1 UK gallon = 4.546 L, 1 US gallon = 3.785 L).

Example: 600 km through France at 6.5 L/100 km uses 39 litres. At €1.90 per litre, that’s about €74.

Getting a realistic figure

Use your car’s real-world consumption rather than the brochure figure, and add 10–15% for motorway speeds, a roof box or a fully loaded car. Motorway service stations usually charge more than the national average, while supermarket stations are often cheaper.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the prices come from?

From the European Commission’s Weekly Oil Bulletin, which publishes the average price reported by each EU country every week, including taxes.

Does it include tolls?

No. This calculator covers fuel only. Toll and vignette prices vary by vehicle, route and time of year, so check the official operator for each country.

Can I use it for an electric car?

Not yet. The bulletin covers petrol, diesel and LPG only.
